Miami to Face Arkansas, Kent State in FGCU Classic

Sept. 2, 2010

CORAL GABLES –

After a record-breaking 3-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast in Tuesday’s home-opener, the University of Miami Hurricanes (2-1-1, 0-0 ACC) will head to Ft. Myers, Fla. to take part in the Eagles’ 2010 Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic, Sept. 3-5 at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

With her two goals Tuesday evening, senior Brittney Steinbruch became the Hurricanes all-time leading goal scorer. Her 30th and 31st career goals surpassed former UM great Britney Butcher’s (2001-04) previous record of 29.

Behind Steinbruch’s scoring record, the story so far for these ‘Canes might just be the offensive depth the squad has shown in the young season.

A year ago, Miami scored only 20 goals on the season. After only four games this season, UM has tallied 11 from eight different goal scorers – with Steinbruch leading the way with three, followed by sophomore Kate Howarth’s two.

“We are getting better with each game played and I am looking forward to competing in the FGCU Classic this weekend,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro.  “Hopefully we can continue to be an offensive threat and include more numbers in the attack.”

Miami will open the Classic on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against the Southeastern Conference’s Arkansas Razorbacks (1-1-0, 0-0 SEC).

Arkansas enters the contest with a 1-0 win over FIU and a 2-1 loss at Stephen F. Austin, with Allie Chandler and Kelsey Allison leading the way with one goal apiece.

Following the Miami/Arkansas contest, Florida Gulf Coast will take on Kent State at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the ‘Canes are scheduled to take on Kent State (0-1-1, 0-0 MAC) at 11 a.m.

Kent State, led by Jessacca Gironda’s two goals, dropped its season-opener to Illinois State (2-1) and then battled to a 2-2 draw at Cleveland State.
