Athens, Ga. – Three University of Miami women’s tennis student-athletes will participate in this year’s NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships, running May 26-31, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The University of Georgia plays host to this year’s championships.
In doubles competition, Miami’s sixth-ranked tandem of senior Laura Vallverdu and sophomore Gabriela Mejia will open their Round of 32 event with Denver’s 54th-ranked team of Sophia Bergner and Ute Schnoy. They will begin their quest for a national title on Thurs., May 27. A time for the match has yet to be determined.
Mejia and Vallverdu enter the tournament with a record of 25-5 on the year, and turned in a mark of 20-4 during the dual season for the `Canes. In what is their first year teaming together on the courts, all at the No. 1 line, the `Canes duo is seeded in the No. 5-8 spots for this year’s field. They earned an automatic bid to the tournament after claiming the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region championship in October. Currently, the Mejia/Vallverdu team holds an 11-match win streak.
In the singles field of 64, Miami has two student-athletes competing in this year’s event, in the form of three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu and 2009 All-American Bianca Eichkorn.
Vallverdu, the NCAA Singles finalist from a season ago, is Miami’s all-time leader in career singles wins (127), and earned the No. 8 overall seed for the singles tournament. Vallverdu, ranked No. 7 in the nation, will open up the Round of 64 on Weds., May 26, facing 24th-ranked Aeriel Ellis of Texas at 3:30 p.m. She earned an at-large bid to the event after turning in a spring record of 19-6, as well as collecting her fourth consecutive 30-win season (31-12 overall).
Eichkorn, a “Sweet 16” participant from the 2009 campaign, enters this year’s tournament on the opposite side of the bracket from her teammate [Vallverdu]. The junior from Tengen, Germany, currently ranked No. 40 in the nation, will open the Round of 64 with 55th-ranked Nina Munch-Soegaard of TCU on Weds., May 26, at 3 p.m. Munch-Soegaard serves as the top-flight player for the Horned Frogs, while Eichkorn plays her matches primarily at the No. 2 position for the `Canes.
Eichkorn concluded the regular season with a record of 28-4, while amassing a 23-0 performance in the spring. She enters working on a 24-match win streak, and has not fallen in a match since Jan. 17, as part of the Michigan Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. She had a no-decision in her last match against Florida’s eighth-ranked Allie Will in the NCAA Quarterfinals of the team tournament on Sat., May 22.
All matches in singles and doubles will be played at either the Henry Field Courts or the McWhorter Courts inside the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. If inclement weather ensues at any point during the matches, they will be moved to either the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility or the Norcross (Ga.) Indoor Facility a short drive from the Athens area.
