Athens, Ga. – The 11th-ranked Miami Hurricanes fell to the No. 3 Florida Gators, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon, bowing out in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. This year’s event is being hosted by the University of Georgia.
Florida (28-2) opened the match collecting the doubles point, earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Miami (20-6) was just unable to bounce back, falling in the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.
The Gators took the upper hand in the doubles portion of the match behind the team of Caroline Hitimana and Anastasia Revzina at the No. 3 line, claiming an 8-3 win from Miami’s Danielle Mills and Claudia Wasilewksi. The clincher for the Gators came at the No. 2 position, using the tandem of 29th-ranked Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather to move past the `Canes 36th-ranked team of Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn, 8-3.
In singles, Florida advanced its lead at 2-0 when ninth-ranked Lauren Embree topped UM senior and ninth-ranked Laura Vallverdu at the No. 1 spot. Embree used a 6-4, 6-2 line to claim the victory.
Florida’s Joanna Mather stretched the Gators’ lead to 3-0, using a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win over Miami’s Gabriela Mejia at the No. 5 position. Mejia finishes her sophomore campaign with a record of 22-3 in the spring, and concluded the 2009-10 campaign at 28-5.
Florida clinched the match at the No. 4 spot, using 102nd-ranked Anastasia Revzina’s 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 three-set thriller, defeating UM freshman Danielle Mills.
“Obviously, as competitors, we wanted to win today, but I’m happy about the way our girls fought and played tough,” stated UM head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “Florida is a very good team, and they played hard today. But I thought my girls played tough, and I’m just proud of all they’ve accomplished this season.”
For UM, this season marked the fourth time in the past five years the `Canes have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals, and the second consecutive. The `Canes finish the season at 20-6 overall, and finished the slate with a 13-1 record at home in Coral Gables.
Miami’s three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu and junior All-American Bianca Eichkorn will now focus on the NCAA Singles Tournament, earning at-large spots in this year’s field of 64. Gabriela Mejia will join Vallverdu in the doubles tournament, where the two earned an automatic bid.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 21-25).
