Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 51 University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its fourth-straight match to a Top 30 opponent, falling to No. 24 Wake Forest, 5-2, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Hurricanes’ top doubles tandem of Christian Blöcker and David Simon put together a strong effort, but the Demon Deacons’ 14th-ranked duo of Steven Forman and Iain Atkinson rallied for the 9-7 victory. Wake Forest (10-5, 4-1 ACC), winner of three straight in conference competition, was just the second opponent to sweep Miami (6-10, 0-6) in doubles play this season en route to the early 1-0 lead.

The Demon Deacons extended their advantage to 2-0 with the straight-sets win at No. 2, but Waylon Chin earned his second-straight win to bring the Hurricanes within one, trailing 2-1. Chin defeated Danny Kreyman, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot for his 10th singles win of the season and his second in ACC play.

Wake Forest took the victory at No. 1 to go up, 3-1. With the match on the line, Miami’s Keith Crowley bounced back after dropping the first set, winning six games in a row to force a third set. But Crowley couldn’t hold on, and the Demon Deacons clinched the match with Atkinson’s 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3.

Simon earned the second point for Miami, outlasting Wake Forest’s Jonathan Wolff at No. 4, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, for his team-high 18th singles win of the season, as he improved to 5-1 versus league competition.

“Wake Forest was the better team today,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “We didn’t show up in the doubles today, but I thought our effort in the singles was really good. David [Simon] played a heck of a match to beat a really good opponent. Our conference includes the best teams in the country and Wake deserved to win today.”

The Hurricanes close out a three-game homestand on Sun., April 4, versus No. 40 NC State at Noon. Admission is free.
