March 25, 2010
Coral Gables, Fla. – After splitting a pair of non-conference matches at home last weekend, the No. 49 University of Miami men’s tennis team returns to the road for ACC competition at top-ranked Virginia on Fri., March 26 and at No. 20 Virginia Tech on Sun., March 28.
The Hurricanes (6-6, 0-3 ACC), who are vying for their first ACC win of the season on Friday, will face a challenge versus the nation’s No. 1 team and three-time ITA national indoor champion Cavaliers (20-1, 3-0). Sunday’s contest will also be tough, as the Hokies (8-3, 2-1) ride a three-match win streak into weekend play.
Miami’s Carl Sundberg and Keith Crowley have each won two-straight singles matches heading into Friday’s match at Virginia, while David Simon has posted a team-high 15 wins during the 2009-10 campaign – including a perfect 3-0 mark in conference play. Christian Blöcker, who split a pair of matches at No. 1 last week, has 13 wins this season.
In doubles play, Miami’s No. 2 tandem of Crowley and Hector Nieto are ranked No. 53 in the nation and have gone 9-1 this season, including a 3-0 mark versus league opponents.
“We are looking forward to playing the No. 1 team in the country,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “Virginia Tech is also having a great year. Both matches are going to be intense, but we are ready for the challenge.”
Following this weekend, the Hurricanes return home to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for a three-match homestand, beginning with No. 34 Wisconsin on Wed., March 31, at 1 p.m. Please note the time has been moved up two hours from its originally scheduled start time.
