No. 9 Kentucky Downs Miami Men's Tennis
March 19, 2010
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 45 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to ninth-ranked Kentucky, 5-2, at home at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats (12-6) bounced back from a pair of losses to Top 10 opponents to hand the Hurricanes (5-6) their fourth-straight loss to a ranked team. Eight of Miami’s 11 opponents in dual-match play this season have been ranked among the nation’s Top 50.
Kentucky won the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches – giving Miami’s 53rd-ranked duo of Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto their first loss of the season – to take the early 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
There, the Wildcats raced to the 3-0 advantage with straight-sets wins at No. 4 and No. 5, however the Hurricanes wouldn’t bow out easily.
Keith Crowley claimed his own straight-sets victory at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6, to get the Hurricanes on the scoreboard, 3-1.
With the match on the line, the competition at the No. 1, 2 and 6 spots heated up, with Carl Sundberg and Barnabas Carrega going into third sets. But 10th-ranked Eric Quigley clinched the match for Kentucky, with the tight 7-6, 7-5 win over Miami’s Christian Blöcker at No. 1.
Sundberg earned Miami’s second point with the 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over No. 37 Alex Musialek in the No. 2 position for his second win over a ranked singles opponent this season.
“Kentucky is a top 10 team and I thought we competed very well against them,” said sixth-year Miami head coach Mario Rincon – who played collegiate tennis for Kentucky and longtime head coach Dennis Emery. “They outplayed us in the doubles, but I’m really proud of our guys’ overall effort.”
The Hurricanes played their second match in as many days on Sat., March 20, playing host to Princeton (3-9) in non-conference competition at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
