Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami men’s tennis players Christian Blöcker and David Simon are competing in the 2010 BMW Tennis Championship this week at the Sunrise Tennis Club.
Blöckerreceived a wild card into the qualifying draw and was part of the talented field in singles competition, including top 100 players as the tournament’s main draw now has a cutoff of No. 66 in the ATP rankings.
Coming off back-to-back ACC road matches over the weekend, the Miami junior dropped his first-round qualifying match to Bobby Reynolds, 6-1, 6-1, on Monday evening.
However competition continues for two Hurricanes as Blöcker and Simon will compete in the doubles main draw on Tuesday evening. They will face the fourth-seeded duo of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares from Brazil. Soares is ranked 26th in the world in the latest ATP doubles rankings, while Melo is No. 38.
The BMW Tennis Championship is in its seventh year as a key stop between two ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events – the BNP Paribas Open and Sony Ericsson Open – and consistently hosts a field of top players. In the past six years the tournament has attracted 22 current/past top 10 players, including three Grand Slam Champions – Juan Martin del Potro, Gustavo Kuerten and Thomas Johansson.
The Miami tennis squad returns to action this weekend, playing host to a pair of non-conference opponents at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes take on No. 6 Kentucky on Fri., March 19, at 3 p.m., and then face Princeton on Sat., March 20, at 3 p.m. Admission is free to all regular-season matches.
