Coral Gables, Fla. – No. 16 Miami women’s tennis (6-3, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) collected wins on all courts Friday, taking a 7-0 sweep of Boston College (5-7, 1-2 ACC) in ACC action housed at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami began the day with three consecutive wins in doubles competition.
The Hurricanes’ No. 3 doubles team of Anna Bartenstein and Claudia Wasilewski picked up their third win together on the campaign, turning in an 8-2 victory over the Eagles’ Katarina Gajic and Jacqueline Mabatah. That was immediately followed by UM’s Bianca Eichkorn and Laura Vallverdu teaming for an 8-3 win over Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev at the top flight position.
Miami finished the doubles point sweep with the duo of Gabriela Mejia and Danielle Mills turning in an 8-3 triumph over Katharine Attwell and Brittany Delaney at the No. 2 position. Together, Mejia and Mills improved to 2-0 in the spring.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, Miami ninth-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews gave the fans, and student-athletes, a different perspective on Friday – switching the positions on the courts from the lawn area to the grandstand side.
Positions No. 4-6 played on the main courts (grandstand side), while the No. 1-3 positions moved to the lawn area of the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Junior All-American Bianca Eichkorn (No. 40) tacked on the first singles win for the `Canes, finishing Boston College’s Olga Khmylev at the No. 3 position on the strength of a 6-0, 6-1 line. In the process, Eichkorn remains unbeaten on the spring (9-0), running to her overall record to 14-4 on the 2009-10 season.
Hurricanes sophomore Anna Bartenstein (No. 55) was next off the courts for UM, as she claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory from BC’s Katarina Gajic at the No. 2 singles spot. Bartenstein now sits 18-3 for the year, improving her spring record to 8-1, while winning nine of her last 10 matches.
It was sophomore Gabriela Mejia claiming the match victory for UM, walking off the courts with her 14th win of the spring, turning in a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Eagles’ Ina Kauppila at the fifth spot. Behind her to make the advantage 5-0 in favor of the `Canes, was senior three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu (No. 4), as she claimed a 7-6(1), 6-0 win over Alex Kelleher.
Vallverdu, who once trailed 5-0 in the opening set, battled back to claim 13 of the next 14, improving her record to 19-8 on the year (7-2 dual).
Senior Claudia Wasilewski, playing on the grandstand main court for the first time in her career, fought back from an early deficit to register a 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 win over Boston College’s Brittany Delaney at the No. 6 position. Wasilewski picked up her 11th win of the year, running her spring record to an even 4-4.
The Hurricanes finished the sweep of the Eagles with freshman Danielle Mills posting a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Katharine Attwell at the No. 4 position. Mills improved to 11-8 for the season (6-2 dual). It was also the Bradenton, Florida native’s second consecutive win, and the seventh in her last 10 overall.
“Overall, I think the girls did a good job today in terms of taking care of a good Boston College team,” stated UM assistant coach Jeff Thomsen afterwards. “This match should be a good platform for us to play our best tennis against FIU next week.”
Miami will step on the court again Wed., Mar. 10, as the Hurricanes travel to local rival FIU in Miami at 2 p.m. The next home match for UM will take place Mon., Mar. 15, as the `Canes welcome TCU to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
