No. 6 Women's Tennis Travels to ITA Indoor Championships

Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team, ranked No. 6 in the nation, travels this weekend to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. All matches will take place at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.
Miami (3-1) will face No. 12 UCLA (5-0) as its opening round opponent on Fri., Feb. 12 at 3:30 p.m. (CST)
The Hurricanes enter the match with three players ranked in singles competition, including Vallverdu–currently ranked No. 7. She is followed by sophomore Gabriela Mejia (No. 93) and junior All-American Bianca Eichkorn (No. 99). In doubles play, the Hurricanes use the third-ranked team of Mejia and Vallverdu at the top spot, owning a record of 2-1 together in the spring.
Vallverdu is Miami’s all-time leader in singles wins, holding 111 in her stellar career in Coral Gables. Junior Bianca Eichkorn is now 16th all-time at UM with 78 career victories in singles competition. Eichkorn is also 4-0 on the year.
Also unbeaten for UM on the spring is freshman Danielle Mills, sporting a 4-0 mark with straight-set wins across the board in her last four matches. Joining Mills as an unbeaten in spring competition is sophomore Gabriela Mejia, sporting a 4-0 record, with straight-set wins in her last five matches–while winning her last six consecutive.
The Bruins of UCLA enter the ITA Indoor Championships at 5-0 on the spring, including a 7-0 sweep of Rice in their last match, and currently rank No. 12 in the Campbell’s/ITA poll. UCLA’s Yasmin Schnack is the team leader at the top flight position, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation. Also ranked for UCLA is Andrea Remynse (No. 41). The doubles team of Remynse and Schnack rank No. 10 nationally.
The series between Miami and UCLA stands in favor of the Bruins, 7-4. However, the `Canes claimed the last meeting, 4-2, in the Round of 16 at the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas. In fact, UM has won the last two meetings against the Bruins–alma mater of UM head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews.
In last year’s ITA Indoor Championships, Miami finished the weekend with a 2-1 mark, collecting victories against No. 5 Stanford (5-1) and No. 68 Wisconsin (7-0). The only loss for UM was a 6-1 setback to top-ranked and 2009 Indoor Champion Northwestern, 7-0.
In addition to UCLA and Miami Hurricanes, this year’s 16-team field includes: Baylor, California, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Northwestern, North Carolina, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and host Wisconsin Badgers. On the women’s side, 12 of the 15 top-ranked seeds from the ITA Kick-Off Weekend advanced to the National Team Indoors for a chance to capture the crown.
Defending NCAA Champion Duke received this year’s top seed, followed by Northwestern (No. 2), California (No. 3), Georgia (No. 4) and Baylor (No. 5).
