Coral Gables, Fla. – The sixth-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team is ready for its first Top 10 match of the season, facing No. 5 Baylor on Sat., Feb. 6 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 11 a.m. in Coral Gables, Fla. Admission to the match is free.

Miami (3-0) comes into the weekend having moved up a spot to No. 6 in this week’s Campbell’s/ITA poll. The Hurricanes defeated a pair of Top 75 teams last weekend as part of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend [Coral Gables]. UM took down Boston University (No. 62) and Mississippi State (No. 57) in 7-0 fashion, respectively.

No. 5 Baylor (2-0) comes into the match having won both of its matches last weekend in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, also serving as a host for the second annual event, defeating Brown and Harvard by 4-0 decision each.

The all-time series between the two schools stands even at 4-4, while the Bears took last year’s decision, 4-2, in Ennis, Texas. The match was moved almost two hours from the urban area of Waco and the Baylor campus due to high winds and threatening weather. In fact, Baylor has won the last three meetings against the `Canes, with both teams ranked in the Top 20 each time.

Miami’s 7-0 sweeps of FAU, Boston and Mississippi State is the first time in the Paige Yaroshuk-Tews era the `Canes have opened the season with sweep decisions – and the first time since 1992 when UM opened the season with clean wins of FIU, North Florida and No. 23 Utah.

The Hurricanes use senior three-time All-American Laura Vallverdu at the top spot, becoming Miami’s all-time singles wins leader in her last match, passing Audrey Bañada (2003-07) with 111 career victories in her time in Coral Gables.

On the year, no Hurricanes player has lost a set to date in singles competition.

Miami enters the match with three players ranked in singles competition, including Vallverdu–currently ranked No. 7. She is followed by sophomore Gabriela Mejia (No. 93) and junior All-American Bianca Eichkorn (No. 99). In doubles play, the Hurricanes use the third-ranked team of Mejia and Vallverdu at the top spot, owning a record of 2-0 together in the spring.

Baylor, under the direction of head coach Joey Scrivano, counters with four singles players and a doubles pair in this week’s rankings. The Bears are led by senior Lenka Broosova (No. 17), followed in the polls by Nina Secerbegovic (No. 24), Jelena Stanivuk (No. 55) and Csilla Borsanyi (No. 70). The doubles team of Broosova and Borsanyi is ranked No. 13, playing at the top flight position for the Bears.
