Hurricanes to Face Bethune-Cookman in Home-Opener

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will host the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in its home-opener at the BankUnited Center on Wednesday, November 18.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Miami is coming off a two-game season-opening road trip where it saw sophomore Riquna Williams put on an offensive clinic.  The Pahokee, Fla. native scored 30 or more points in back-to-back games for the ‘Canes since Tamara James did it during the 2005-06 season. She also set a school record with eight threes at CSU Bakersfield.

               

The Hurricanes are 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season and are averaging an impressive 98.5 points per game.  In the 111-93 win over CSUB on Sunday, Miami fell just one point shy of tying the school record for points at 112, set in 1991 in a win over Stetson.

               

Diane Barnes recorded a double-double in the season opener at UC Riverside with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Shenise Johnson scored 23 points with 12 boards at CSU Bakersfield.

 

A Look at the Wildcats

Bethune-Cookman is coming of an 80-78 overtime win over Florida Memorial on Saturday, in its only game played so far this season.

               

The Wildcats are led by Demetria Frank who is averaging 20.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Jasmine Daniels is averaging 19.0 points per game while Jalisa Isaac and Sarah Bolden each average 12.0.

               

Bethune-Cookman is averaging 80.0 points and 48.0 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 38.8 percent (26-67) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-18) from beyond the arc and 74.2 (23-31) from the free throw line. The Wildcats also register 10.0 steals and 2.0 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 78.0 points per game and a shooting percentage of 39.3 (24-61).

 

The Series

Miami holds a 6-1 all-time advantage in the series between the two programs dating back to 1981. However, the two teams have not met since the 1989-90 season when the Hurricanes defeated the Wildcats on two occasions.
