Mejia/Vallverdu Duo Advances to ITA Regional Finals

Atlanta, Ga. – The doubles team of Laura Vallverdu and Gabriela Mejia collected two wins Sunday in order to advance to Monday’s doubles championship match at this year’s Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Additionally, Vallverdu advanced to the main draw semifinals in singles play.
Mejia and Vallverdu opened the day with a thrilling 8-5 triumph over cross-town rival FIU and the team of Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo. Brito and Castillo entered the match as the sixth seed and ranked No. 23 nationally in the preseason ITA doubles poll.
After taking the win from the Golden Panthers’, Miami’s Mejia and Vallverdu kept their slate clean for the year, running their record to 6-0 following an 8-4 win against Florida’s team of Lauren Embree and Allie Will. Embree and Will were the top seed in this year’s event, marking the second consecutive seeded team defeated by the Hurricanes tandem.
Vallverdu and Gabriella Mejia will take on USF’s tandem of Melissa Koning and Irene Rehberger in the main doubles draw finals tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In singles play, Vallverdu earned a spot in the semifinals of main draw action by taking down Florida’s Claire Bartlett in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Vallverdu, ranked No. 6 nationally, serves as the No. 2 seed in this year’s field, and she will meet sixth-seeded Allie Will of Florida tomorrow in the semifinals.
With the win, Vallverdu ran her record for the year out to 6-3.
