Laura Vallverdu Falls at All-American Championships

Oct. 8, 2009

Pacific Palisades, Calif. – University of Miami women’s tennis senior Laura Vallverdu, No. 6 in the ITA, fell to No. 12 Sanaz Marand (North Carolina), 6-2, 6-2 in opening-round action of the main draw during the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday afternoon in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The event is taking place at the Riviera Tennis Club.

Vallverdu, a three-time All-America performer for the Hurricanes, was facing Marand for the second time in her career at the All-American Championships–the last being a 6-3, 6-0 triumph in 2005. However, the Valencia Venezuela native (Vallverdu) was unable to sustain momentum this time, falling in straight sets to the UNC foe.

Vallverdu will now prepare for the consolation singles draw set to begin Friday, Oct. 9. Times and draws for the consolation round will be available after 6:15 (PST) Thursday evening.
