Miami Looks to Start Winning-Streak at Georgia Tech

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team will travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Thursday, Jan. 29, with tip off set for 7 p.m.

Miami has had a week to prepare for its second rivalry game against Georgia Tech. Last Thursday the Hurricanes won their first Atlantic Coast Conference game with a 72-60 showing at the BankUnited Center over NC State.
Coming into that game, Miami had the worst free-throw percentage in the conference at 60.3 percent. However, the ‘Canes hit 26 of 29 attempts from the charity stripe on the game, including a 9-10 showing from freshman Riquna Williams. The Pahokee, Fla. native led her team with 18 points on the night.
Fellow freshman Shenise Johnson recorded her fourth double-double of the season with an 11-point, 13-rebound effort. Also scoring in double-figures for the evening was Charmaine Clark, who netted a season-high 13 points. Latoya Drake also had a big night as she pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds.
A Look at Georgia Tech
Georgia Tech enters Thursday night’s game with an 14-5 record. In their last two games, the Yellow Jackets have upset the No.2 North Carolina Tar Heels (66-62) and then fell to the No. 4/8 Duke Blue Devils (60-34).
The Yellow Jackets are led by Alex Montgomery who is averaging 13.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Jacqua Williams and Iasia Hemingway score 13.0 and 11.1 points per game respectively.
Georgia Tech is averaging 66.3 points and 38.4 rebounds per game as a team. It is shooting 41.3 percent (448-1085) from the floor, 31.7 percent (88-278) from beyond the arc and 70.2 (275-392) from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets also register 13.9 steals and 2.8 blocked shots per outing, while holding their opponents to 54.5 points per game and a shooting percentage of 39.6 (383-966).
The Series
These two teams have faced each other three times in each of the last two seasons and this will be the second-time that the two have met this season. Just 17 days ago, Georgia Tech defeated the Hurricanes at the BankUnited Center by a 60-50 margin. In that game, junior Diane Barnes was the only Hurricane to score in double-figures, with 11 points. In the 2007-08 season each team won a regular season game apiece with the Yellow Jackets winning again in the ACC Tournament.
