Julia Cohen Defeats 95th-Ranked Sevastova in ITF Event

Bronx, N.Y. – University of Miami women’s tennis player Julia Cohen defeated No. 95 Anastasija Sevastova (7-6, 4-6, 6-1) of Latvia as part of the EmblemHealth Bronx Open Wednesday afternoon, advancing to the Round of 16 at Crotona Park in Bronx, N.Y.

Cohen, a junior from Philadelphia, Pa., is advancing to her first Round of 16 in the annual event. She advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 NCAA Women’s Singles Championships before falling to eventual national champion Mallory Cecil of Duke in College Station, Texas.

Sevastova is currently ranked No. 95 in the world by the WTA.

In order to advance to today’s round, Cohen swept through Marjana Lucic of Croatia on Tuesday in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Lucic won one Grand Slam women’s doubles title at the Australian Open in 1998 when she was only 15 years old, partnering with Martina Hingis.

Cohen will take on Kristina Barrois (GER) tomorrow morning as her next competitor. Barrois enters the match currently ranked No. 66 by the WTA. She has won two German Tennis Championships, and reached the main draw of two Grand Slam events in 2006.
