CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 2009 University of Miami football team opened its fall camp Saturday morning with a two-hour session at Cobb Stadium. Donning helmets and shorts, the Hurricanes worked in warm conditions, with the heat index reaching into the mid-90’s by the end of the practice.

Approximately 1,500 exclusive season ticket holders were on hand to catch an early glimpse of the 2009 Hurricanes, including quarterback Jacory Harris, running back Graig Cooper and 2008 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year Sean Spence.

The team spent the first part of practice working on kicking drills, before moving into position drills about 30 minutes into the session. From there, the ‘Canes worked on punting and blitz packages before moving into 7-on-7 and full team drills.

Defensive backs Brandon Harris and DeMarcus Van Dyke stood out in the secondary, with each player pulling down an interception. Wide receiver Tommy Streeter and tight end Dedrick Epps each caught long touchdown passes in 7-on-7 drills.

Saturday afternoon, head coach Randy Shannon and select players took part in the team’s annual preseason media day activities at the Knight Sports Complex.

The team will return to practice Sunday morning for a closed session at the Greentree Practice Fields.

The `Canes will open their 2009 schedule in Tallahassee on Monday, Sept. 7 against No. 19 Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium. The 8 p.m. contest will be nationally televised by ESPN.
