CORAL GABLES, FLA… – The No. 36 University of Miami men’s tennis team cruised to the 5-0 win over No. 21 Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, with the match ultimately ending early due to rain.

The Hurricanes (9-7, 5-2 ACC), who have won three of their last four ACC matches, picked up strong wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions over the Hokies (11-4, 4-2), to earn the doubles point and take the 1-0 lead. Miami’s top doubles team of Daniel Vallverdu and David Rosenfeld improved to 4-2 with the 8-2 win, while Keith Crowley and Carl Sundberg clinched the point for UM with the 8-6 win at No. 2 for their second win in ACC competition.

In singles play, Rosenfeld – who has won three of his last four matches – was dominant at the No. 2 position, rolling past Virginia Tech’s Pedro Graber, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Hurricanes the 2-0 advantage.

Crowley extended Miami’s lead to 3-0, with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Brandon Corace. It was his fourth win in his last five matches, as the sophomore improved to 4-1 in ACC play and 17-7 overall.

Sundberg, the 90th ranked player in the nation, clinched the match for the Hurricanes with the 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Sebastien Jacques. It was the second-straight win for Sundberg – who is a team-best 6-1 in ACC play – and his fifth victory in his last six matches.

Ignacio Taboada added the fifth point for the Hurricanes at the No. 6 position, using a tiebreak to defeat Virginia Tech’s Patrick Daciek, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6, before the rain put a halt to the competition.

“It was another really important ACC win for us,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “We had to win this one and our guys played really well. I feel like this team is getting better – our doubles are improving, and the guys are getting used to playing with each other. When David [Rosenfeld] and Dani [Vallverdu] came back, they were not playing their best tennis, but I think after each match they continue to get better.”

The Hurricanes hit the road for their next two ACC matches – traveling to Raleigh to take on NC State on Fri., April 3, at 2 p.m. and then head to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest on Sun., April 5, at noon.
