March 24, 2009
Greensboro, N.C. – After collecting a 3-0 record last week, University of Miami sophomore Julia Cohen has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office in Greensboro, N.C. This is the second time Cohen has collected the honor on the 2009 campaign.
On the week, Cohen–a native of Philadelphia, Pa., collected a 3-0 record with all three victories coming against ranked opponents at flight one singles for the Hurricanes. She helped the eighth-ranked Hurricanes to a 3-0 record as a team with wins over No. 21 Arkansas, No. 15 North Carolina and No. 7 Duke, respectively.
Ranked No. 6 in the latest Campbell’s/ITA singles poll, Cohen won all three singles and doubles matches she participated in last week, stretching her winning streak to 10 matches in singles play, and five in doubles (alongside partner Bianca Eichkorn).
Cohen improved to 6-0 in ACC play as she took two matches at the top flight against No. 53 Sanaz Marand (North Carolina) and No. 31 Mallory Cecil (Duke). Her biggest triumph of the week was her decisive 6-1, 6-1 defeat of the nation’s fourth-ranked player, Aurelija Miseviciute, of Arkansas. All three of Cohen’s victories were straight-set victories.
For Cohen, it was the fifth time this year she’s defeated a Top 25 foe, and the fourth time in the spring she’s beaten a Top 10 opponent.
Cohen and Eichkorn were instrumental in helping Miami claim the doubles point in three matches this week, earning a 3-0 record at flight two doubles. Cohen has dropped just two sets in her current 10-match winning streak.
