Men's Tennis Edges North Carolina, 4-3

CHAPEL HILL, N.C… – With the match on the line, University of Miami senior David Rosenfeld picked up the win at No. 3 singles to clinch the third ACC victory of the season for the No. 45 Hurricanes at No. 34 North Carolina.
With the 4-3 victory, the Hurricanes improve to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Tar Heels fall to 11-4 and 0-2 in league play.
“It was a huge ACC road win for us,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “I’m so proud of our guys coming together and overcoming Wednesday’s tough loss versus Kentucky. I can’t say enough about David’s [Rosenfeld] toughness as he put the match away for us. [Assistant coach] CJ [Weber] was able to make a small adjustment on our return games which gave us more opportunities to get to break point.
“This is a big win for our team,” added Rosenfeld. “We needed this – and it was great to pull it off for the team. Everyone fought hard and overcame a lot.”
The Hurricanes got off to a strong start, winning the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead.
“The doubles point was crucial today,” said Rincon. “Keith [Crowley] and Carl [Sundberg] played a great tie break to decide the doubles point, and David Simon and Christian [Blocker] were able to give us a quick lead as they played a solid doubles match as well.”
Miami extended its advantage to 3-0 with straight-sets wins at No. 5 by 90th ranked Carl Sundberg and in the top flight by 27th-ranked Daniel Vallverdu.
But the Tar Heels rallied on their home court – winning three-straight singles matches at No. 2, 6 and 4 to knot the score at 3-all.
However the veteran Rosenfeld was strong in the decisive third set versus Andrew Crone, and knocked off his opponent 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, to ensure the Miami victory.
The Hurricanes return to ACC play on Sunday, March 22, at Duke at 1 p.m.
