McClinton Receives ACC's Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award

CORAL GABLES, FLA. – University of Miami men’s basketball player Jack McClinton has been selected as a recipient of the Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
McClinton is among six student-athletes – and just two men’s basketball players – selected for the Honorary Award which recognizes individuals for their outstanding performance in both athletic competition and the classroom throughout their collegiate careers and intend to compete at the Olympic or professional level.
A three-time All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team selection, McClinton has also been recognized for his excellence on the court – with back-to-back First Team All-ACC accolades as a junior and senior following Third Team honors as a sophomore.
McClinton is the only player on any All-ACC men’s basketball team in 2009 to also earn academic honors, and in 2008 he was the only First Team All-ACC selection that was also named to the All-ACC Academic Men’s Basketball Team.
A three-year starter for the Hurricanes, McClinton leads the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (.464, third in the nation), three-point field goals per game (3.1) and free throw percentage (.885, ninth in the nation), while ranking third in scoring with 19.7 points per game – including an 21.8 point average in ACC games (second-best in the league). The Baltimore-native is the ACC’s all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage (.443) and ranks second in career free throw percentage (.900).
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of the late Jim Weaver and Bob James as well as Gene Corrigan, all former ACC commissioners. Other student-athletes to also earn the Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award are Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst (women’s golf), Maryland’s Dan Gronkowski (football), North Carolina’s Yael Averbuch (women’s soccer), NC State’s Ben McCauley (men’s basketball) and Virginia’s Andrew Carraway (baseball).
Miami’s Britta Boesing (women’s swimming & diving), Corynn Carino (women’s soccer) and Nene Kamate (women’s track & field) are recipients of the Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships. These $5,000 scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate-level degree following graduation and have performed with distinction in both the classroom and in their respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
The 42 total student-athletes earning these honors will be honored April 15, 2009, in Greensboro, N.C., at a luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club at the Koury Convention Center.
