No. 17 Men's Tennis Hosts FAU in Spring Season Opener

CORAL GABLES, FLA… The No. 17 University of Miami men’s tennis team will open its 2009 spring season at home versus in-state rival Florida Atlantic on Thurs., Jan. 22, at the Neil Schiff Center at 6 p.m.
The Hurricanes, who hold the 14-1 all-time series lead over the Owls, return all but one player from last season’s 17-8 squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked 19th in the nation.
Among those veterans back for the Hurricanes are All-Americans Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Valenzuela) and Carl Sundberg (Oslo, Norway). The duo enters the 2009 season ranked No. 28 in doubles competition, while Vallverdu is No. 17 in the singles rankings, followed by Sundberg at No. 96.
Florida Atlantic enters Thursday’s match with a 2-1 record in dual match play, with wins over Xavier and Florida A&M and a 5-2 loss to No. 11 Florida State on Saturday. Marc Abdelnour leads FAU with a 7-2 overall record, including a perfect 3-0 mark at the No. 1 position.
Following Thursday’s match versus Florida Atlantic, the Hurricanes remain home to play host to No. 24 Rice on Sun., Jan. 25, at 10 a.m.
