Miami Set to Host Wisconsin-Green Bay

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team (1-0) will look to go to 2-0 on the young season against the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix at the BankUnited Center Sunday afternoon.

The Hurricanes are coming off their biggest win in six years, in terms of margin of defeat, as they trounced Norfolk State 91-42 in their season-opener Friday afternoon.
Latoya Drake scored a career-high 22 points coming off the bench in the win. She wasn’t the only Hurricane player to record career-highs in the game. Sophomre Diane Barnes, predicted by many of her teammates to have a break-out season, recorded a double-double in scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, both career-best marks. Senior guard LaToya Cunningham dished out nine assists, tying her best game total.
Freshman Shenise Johnson proved that she will be a multiple threat when she is on the court as she scored 12 points to go with her 10 rebounds, she also dealt out five assists.
Maybe more impressive than all the individual achievement for Miami was they way the team played defense and hit the boards. The Hurricanes forced 29 turnovers, 17 coming on steals. They also held a 60-27 advantage on the glass, 28 on the offensive end, leading to 22 second chance points.
A Look at Wisconsin-Green BayThe Phoenix are coming off a 68-45 season-opening win over FIU on Friday. Green Bay stifled FIU with their defense for most of the game to post the 23-point victory. The Panthers shot just 30.8% for the game.The Phoenix was strong on the offensive end, too, shooting 56 percent from the field in the first half toopen up a 41-18 lead. For the game, Green Bay hit 9-of-20 from the three-point arc. Point guard Kati Harty tied a career-high with 18 points and Heather Golden came off the bench to score 14 points, one off her career best.
Perennially one of the nation’s winningest teams, Green Bay is coming off a 26-6 season, whichmarked its 31st consecutive winning campaign. The Phoenix also claimed its 10th straight HorizonLeague regular season title and advanced to the WNIT.
The SeriesSunday will mark the second time that these two teams have met. In the only previous meeting, Green Bay took an 83-72 win on their home court in 2002. This will be the Phonix first visit to Coral Gables.
