Oct. 30, 2008
Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team travels back west this weekend for a three-day tournament at the Palm Desert Tennis Club which is hosting this year’s Palm Desert Classic. The event begins Friday, Oct. 31 and runs through Nov. 2.
Also known as the Duals in the Desert, this year’s event takes place at the Moore Tennis Academy in Palm Desert, California.
Joining the Hurricanes in this year’s field will be student-athletes from seven other schools making up this year’s eight-team field. Also featured is last year’s NCAA Women’s Tennis champion UCLA.
UM and fellow member Texas reached the Sweet 16 of last year’s NCAA Tournament, while Northwestern finished up in the Elite Eight. Participating member Baylor advanced on to the semifinals. Also joining the field are USC and ACC members North Carolina and Clemson.
Playing this weekend for the Hurricanes is No. 49 Michaela Kissell, a strong junior from Pennsylvania, along with freshmen Gabriela Mejia and Alessa Waibel.
