Vallverdu and Simon Advance at ITA Southeast Regional Champs

Lexington, Ky. – Top-seeded Daniel Vallverdu and 16th-seeded David Simon of the University of Miami men’s tennis team won their second-round matches to advance at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Kentucky on Friday.
The seeded players each earned first round byes and used straight sets wins in the Round of 64 to advance to Saturday’s Round of 32.
Vallverdu, the nation’s third ranked singles player, knocked off USF’s Alex Pukal, 6-3, 6-1, and will face Florida’s Dan Cash on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Simon cruised past Vanderbilt’s Charlie Jones, 6-2, 6-2 – an opponent he faced in doubles action just one day prior. The junior transfer will take on LSU’s James Cluskey tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. as well.
David Rosenfeld downed Tennessee’s Matt Brewer, 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the Round of 128 before falling to Georgia’s 17th-seeded Josh Varela, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the Round of 64.
Ignacio Taboada saw a similar fate, coming back for the strong win over Tennessee Tech’s Mario Gutierrez, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0, and then losing to Georgia’s 10th-seeded Javier Garrapiz, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, in the second round.
Despite a strong start, Keith Crowley fell in the first round to Tennessee’s Jeremy Tweedt, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Vallverdu and Simon play on in the Round of 32 on Saturday, with the winners advancing to the Round of 16 later that day.
