Men's Tennis Strong in Day One of ITA Southeast Regional Champs

Lexington, Ky. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team got off to strong start on Thursday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Kentucky as the UM tandem of David Rosenfeld and David Simon advanced to the Round of 16.
In a busy day one that saw three rounds of doubles action, the Hurricanes duo (3-3) earned a first-round bye and then defeated Vanderbilt’s Charlie Jones and Bryant Salcedo, 9-7, to advance to the Round of 16. In Thursday’s third round, the Miami tandem fell to Alabama’s Ricky Doverspike and Andrew Felsenthal, 8-5, to end doubles play.
Miami’s Keith Crowley and Ignacio Taboada also saw early success on Thursday. The duo (1-2) cruised past Kennesaw State’s Simon Janik and Michael Langel, 8-2, before falling in the second round to Auburn’s Tim Puetz and Alexey Tsyrenov, 9-7, in a hard-fought match.
Although the Hurricanes are out of the doubles competition after three rounds, five Hurricanes are slated to open singles play on Friday. Senior Daniel Vallverdu, the third-ranked player in the country, is seeded first in the tournament and will have a first-round bye. He will face the winner of the match between USF’s Alex Pukal and Murray State’s Luka Milicevic at 5 p.m.
Simon, seeded 16th in the tournament, also has a first-round bye and will square off versus the winner of the match between Jones of Vanderbilt and Tennessee’s Bryan Swartz at 7:30 p.m.
Crowley kicks off singles competition for the Hurricanes contingent at 2 p.m. versus Tennessee’s Jeremy Tweedt at 2 pm., while Taboada faces Tennessee Tech’s Mario Gutierrez at 3:30 p.m. Rosenfeld will open singles play versus Tennessee’s Matt Brewer at 4 p.m.
