Oct. 9, 2008
Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Miami’s top-ranked doubles tandem of Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg won in straight sets on Thursday to advance in the main draw of the D’Novo/ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
In their fall debut, Vallverdu and Sundberg downed Oklahoma State’s 10th-ranked duo of Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov – who is also ranked No. 1 in singles play, 8-6.
The Hurricanes will face North Carolina’s Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman on Friday at noon. The Tar Heels advanced after an 8-3 first-round win over Florida’s Jeff Dadamo and Tyler Hochwalt.
Vallverdu, ranked third in the nation in singles play, fell in his first singles match of the fall. Fresno State’s 48th-ranked Rudolph SIwy defeated Vallverdu, 6-4, 6-3.
“Danny [Vallverdu] did have a tough loss today in singles,” said assistant coach CJ Weber. “”But he completely turned it around in doubles play. Both he and Carl [Sundberg] played some of the best doubles I’ve seen them play.”
The duo continues in All-American Championships competition on Friday.
