Crowley Takes Third at Wolverine Invitational
Sept. 21, 2008
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Sophomore Keith Crowley (Capetown, South Africa) finished third overall to lead the No. 19 University of Miami men’s tennis team on the third and final day of competition at the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.
For the second-straight day, Crowley picked up wins in both singles and doubles play to emerge as Miami’s top finisher in third place with 20 points. Senior David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla.) also picked up wins in singles and doubles competition to finish in a tie for seventh place with 16 points, while junior transfer David Simon (Vienna, Austria/Louisville) tied for ninth with 14 points.
“Overall, we had a good tournament,” said fifth-year head men’s tennis coach Mario Rincon. “The players continued to work hard in their first competition of the year. Both Ignacio [Taboada] and Keith [Crowley] played much better in doubles today, while David [Rosenfeld] was more aggressive at the start of the match, which resulted in a win for him.”
The Hurricanes continued to show improvement as the Wolverine Invitational progressed, winning five of seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches on Sunday.
Rosenfeld earned his first singles win at the No. 1 position, defeating Denver’s David Simson, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Junior J.C. Whitner (Bradenton, Fla.) also picked up his first singles victory of the fall, using straight sets to knock off Denver’s Johan Gunnarsson, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5.
Crowley improved to 2-1 with a straight-sets win over Denver’s Martin Zimmerman at No.3 (6-3, 7-5), while freshman Ignacio Taboada (Atlanta, Ga.) also moved to 2-1 with a 6-7, 7-6, 10-3 defeat of Denver’s Yannick Weihs at No. 4. Junior Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla.) downed Denver’s Andrew Landwerlen, 6-3, 6-4, to improve to 2-1.
In doubles play, Miami’s top-flight tandem of Rosenfeld and Crowley improved to 2-0 with a tough 9-8 victory over Notre Dame’s Brett Helgeson and Tyler Davis. At No. 2, Simon and Taboada picked up their first doubles win together, cruising past Notre Dame’s Stephen Havens and Casey Watt, 8-3.
Miami, No. 16 Michigan, No. 29 Notre Dame and No. 45 Denver all competed in this weekend’s Wolverine Invitational. Points were earned by individuals based on the position, with a singles win at No. 1 earning eight points, a singles win at No. 2 earning seven points, and on down with one point earned with a win at No. 8. In doubles play, an individual can earn four points with a win at No. 1 doubles, three points for each player with a win at No. 2, two points for a win at No. 3 and one point for each player for a victory at No. 4 doubles.
Michigan’s Jason Jung won the tournament with 32 points, while Notre Dame’s Daniel Stahl finished runner-up with 22 points.
