Sept. 3, 2008
Coral Gables, Fla. – Julia Cohen, a sophomore transfer from the University of Florida, has officially transferred to the University of Miami to play women’s tennis for the Hurricanes under eighth-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews.
Playing at the No. 1 singles position for the Florida Gators last season, Cohen collected a record of 14-8 overall while becoming the first freshman since 1994 to play at the top spot for the Gators. In the process, she was selected as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) South Region Rookie of the Year, as well as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Rookie of the Year.
“Julia is undoubtedly one of the toughest competitors in college tennis,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I am excited to have her in Coral Gables and I look forward to her bright future both academically and athletically at UM.”
Julia finished the 2008 season ranked No. 32 in the ITA in singles play, as well as helping the Gators to a No. 6 national ranking heading into last season’s NCAA Tournament semifinals.
Julia was an exceptionally accomplished and successful junior player, reaching a combined career-high of No. 4 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior world rankings on June 11, 2007. She was ranked as high as No. 360 in the WAY Tour professional singles rankings (April 23, 2007) and No. 771 in doubles play (December 3, 2007).
She participated in 12 Junior Grand Slam events, while reaching the doubles final of the 2007 Australia Open Junior Championships alongside partner Urszula Radwanska (Poland). She would also reach the qualifying draw of the 2004 and 2005 Women’s U.S. Opens.
Cohen is a three-time member of the U.S. Junior Fed Cup team. In 2006, she captured the Copa Graiman singles championship while reaching the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the Junior Championships at Wimbledon and at the Girls’ 18 USTA National Championships.
Her brother, Josh, lettered with the UM men’s tennis team from 2004-07 and earned All-ACC honors in 2005.
The University of Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis squad will open up its fall season Sept. 19-21 at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va.
