The Hurricanes (17-8), winners in eight of their last 10 matches this season, were forced to battle the elements as well on Sunday, with high winds and two rains delays totaling 81 minutes.
“Florida played a great match today,” said fourth-year Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “They were very solid in singles and in doubles. We played poorly in the doubles, but came out much stronger in singles competition.
“But I’m proud of this team. It has been a great team effort to put together the season that we have had.”
The Gators (17-7) got off to a strong start, claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. They built their lead to 3-0, with singles wins at No. 4 and No. 2, before the Hurricanes posted their only point of the afternoon – a 7-5, 6-2 win by David Rosenfeld at No. 3, his ninth straight-sets win of the season.
Florida clinched the match with a win at No. 6, and will advance to the NCAA’s Round of 16 for the seventh-straight season to face No. 7 Texas.
The Hurricanes had advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in the last three years in their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the program’s 43rd appearance in the last 50 years.
Although team competition now comes to a close for Miami, All-American junior Daniel Vallverdu and freshman Carl Sundberg will compete in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships from May 21-26 at the Michael D. CaseTennisCenter in Tulsa, Okla. Vallverdu (28-8) is seeded fifth among the 64 singles competitors, while he and Sundberg are seeded third among the 32 duos slated to compete in the doubles competition.
