April 8, 2008

Coral Gables, Fla. – University of Miami’s Carl Sundberg has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after notching key wins in both singles and doubles for No. 27 Miami in conference action last weekend.

Sundberg, a true freshman, went undefeated last week to help the Hurricanes snap a four-match skid and defeat both No. 28 Wake Forest and No. 44 NC State by 4-3 scores. He posted wins over NC State’s Derek Stephens (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) and Wake Forest’s Jonathan Wolff (1-6, 6-3, 6-3) at No. 4 singles, clinching the game-winning point for the overall victory in both matches.

The native from Oslo, Norway, also collected a pair of wins over ranked opponents in doubles play. He paired up with Daniel Vallverdu as the nation’s 35th-ranked tandem, knocking off NC State’s ninth-ranked duo of Jay Weinacker and Nick Cavaday, 8-3, and the 11th-ranked twosome of Cory Parr and Steven Forman from Wake Forest, 8-4.

Miami heads north to conclude the regular season this weekend, traveling to Boston College on Friday and then making its way to Maryland on Sunday. The Hurricanes will return to the Sunshine State in preparation for next week’s ACC Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., which takes place Thur.-Sun., Apr. 17-20 at Sanlando Park.
