Crowley Clinches Men's Tennis Win over Kentucky
Feb. 3, 2008
Lexington, Ky. – The No. 36 University of Miami men’s tennis team returned to its winning ways, defeating No. 48 Kentucky, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon for its first road win of the young spring season.
The Hurricanes (4-1) got off to a strong start, clinching the doubles point courtesy of wins by the 30th-ranked tandem of All-American Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg in the No. 1 position and by the Miami duo of Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto at No. 3.
The Wildcats battled back in singles competition, picking up wins at the No. 4 and 2 positions to take the 2-1 lead. But Vallverdu, ranked seventh in the nation in singles play, knotted the score at 2-all with a win over Kentucky’s 31st-ranked Bruno Agostinelli, 6-3, 7-5, in the No. 1 singles match. Vivek Subramanian broke the tie with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory, playing at No. 3 for the first time this season, and Crowley clinched the match for the Hurricanes with a comeback win at No. 5.
“This is a tremendous win for us,” said head Miami coach Mario Rincon, who was an All-American at Kentucky under current head coach Dennis Emery. “The doubles point was crucial today. We got ourselves in a tight situation when David [Rosenfeld] and Carl [Sundberg] dropped their matches, but Vivek [Subramanian] really got us back into the match.
“Being able to come back to Lexington today is a great honor. Coach Emery has built one of the best programs in the country over the years. He is one of the most successful coaches in college tennis, and I’ve continued to learn from him – not only as a player, but now as a fellow coach.”
“It was great to be able to rebound from losing our last match, and to see one of our freshmen clinch a huge match on the road for us,” added Subramanian.
The Hurricanes will compete in their third-straight road match on Sunday, Feb. 10, at Rice.
