Miami Women's Tennis Enters ITA Top 10

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 10 this week, moving up one spot from No. 11 to No. 10 after a 7-0 shutout win over FAU in the season-opener Friday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (1-0) opened the spring season in convincing fashion, going 23-4 in singles play and 11-1 in doubles action at the FGCU/Johan Kriek Classic, Jan. 18-21, before cruising to the victory over the Owls. No. 29 Laura Vallverdu and Romy Farah continued their dominance at the top with both picking up 6-0, 6-0 shutout wins in the No.1 and No. 2 spots respectively to set the pace for UM.
In the current ITA rankings, Atlantic Coast Conference schools comprise three of the Top 10 teams in the country, with Georgia Tech currently ranked as the nation’s top team and Clemson sitting just one spot ahead of the `Canes at No. 9.
Stanford, UCLA, Florida, Georgia, California, Northwestern and Southern Cal hold spots two through eight.
Miami’s season-opening win over FAU marked the 22nd straight season the `Canes opened their season with a victory.
UM will remain at home next weekend when it hosts a pair ranked opponents in No. 31 Florida International on Saturday, Feb. 2 and No. 30 Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 3. The match against FIU is scheduled for 11 a.m. while the contest against the Wolverines is slated for 10 a.m. Admission is free for all home matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
