Men's Tennis Closes Competition at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

Athens, Ga. – The University of Miami’s men’s tennis team closed competition on Saturday at the 2007 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia.

Sophomore Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) fell to Josh Varela of host Georgia, 6-2, 7-5, in Saturday’s Division II Round of 32. He had advanced after defeating Morehead State’s Charles Williams in three sets on Friday.

Sophomore Westin Wendt (Weston, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) dropped his Division III consolation match to Middle Tennessee’s Derrick Davidson, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

In Division II doubles action late Friday, Miami’s tandem of Carrega and sophomore Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) fell to East Tennessee’s Daniel Isaza and Lisandro Picardo, 8-4.

The Hurricanes return to competition on the court this weekend at the All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
