Carrega Advances at Southern Intercollegiate Championships
Sept. 21, 2007Sophomore Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) of the University of Miami’s men’s tennis team advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2007 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia on Friday afternoon.
Athens, Ga. – Sophomore Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) of the University of Miami’s men’s tennis team advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2007 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia on Friday afternoon.
After a first-round bye, Carrega knocked off Charles Williams of Morehead State, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5), in Division II singles competition for his third win of the fall season. With Friday’s Round of 64 victory, Carrega will next take on Josh Varela of host Georgia on Saturday at 11 a.m. Varela advanced on a 7-6 (3), 6-4 straight-sets win over Richard Cowden.
After a first-round bye, Miami sophomore Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) saw his two match win streak snapped, as he fell in the Round of 64 to Middle Tennessee’s Joao Paoliello, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Miami’s third representative, sophomore Westin Wendt (Weston, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) also dropped his match in the Round of 32, falling to Wofford’s Alan Donald, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Carrega returns to action for the Hurricanes in the Round of 32 on Saturday at 11 a.m.
