Men's Tennis Strong on Day Two of Fighting Illini Invitational

Olympia Fields, Ill. – University of Miami All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) knocked off Illinois’ ninth-ranked Ryan Rowe in straight sets to lead the Hurricanes’ men’s tennis team on day two of the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational.

The 19th ranked junior picked up his second-straight singles win of the tournament over a ranked opponent, downing Rowe, 6-3, 6-4.

Freshman Carl Sundberg (Oslo, Norway) also picked up his second singles win, knocking off Illinois’ Brandon Davis, 6-2, 6-2. On Friday, he earned his first collegiate win with a victory over Notre Dame’s Andrew Roth who had to retire after playing to a 5-5 first-set tie.

Other Hurricanes to pick up singles wins on Saturday were senior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswich, N.J.) with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abe Souza of Illinois; sophomore Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) over Illinois’ Jordan Knue and sophomore Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory over Illinois’ Calon Alpar.

The Hurricanes close out competition at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday.
