Vallverdu Leads Men's Tennis in Fall Opener

Olympia Fields, Ill. – University of Miami All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) won a singles match and paired up with David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla./Gulliver Prep) for a pair of doubles wins to highlight day one of the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in the fall opener for the Hurricanes’ men’s tennis team.

Vallverdu, ranked 19th in the preseason Fila/ITA Poll, used straight sets to defeat Notre Dame’s 32nd-ranked Sheeva Parbhu, 6-3, 6-1.

The junior also found success in doubles competition partnering with Rosenfeld – who transferred from Virginia Tech prior to the 2006-07 season. The duo knocked off Notre Dame’s 32nd-ranked tandem of Andrew Roth and Parbhu, 8-5, and then downed another Fighting Irish pair – Brett Helgeson and Santiago Montoya – 8-4.

Miami’s sophomore duo of Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) and Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) picked up an 8-6 win over Notre Dame’s Tyler Davis and Stephen Havens.

The Hurricanes return to action on day two of the invitational on Sat., Sept. 15.
