D'Agord's Run Comes to a Close in NCAA Quarterfinals
May 26, 2007
Athens, Ga. – Four-time University of Miami men’s tennis All-American Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) saw his collegiate career come to a close with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Illinois’ fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Center.
“I had a great time at this tournament,” said D’Agord. “I really enjoyed playing at UM. I got a lot better and I’m looking forward to playing at the next level.”
“It’s tough for this tournament to come to an end for Luigi,” added volunteer assistant coach Tom Pudge, who has worked extensively with D’Agord for several years. “He played a great match today. I’m very proud of his college career and what he did at UM.
“Luigi has a bright future, and we are looking forward to his career as a professional player.”
D’Agord, the two-time ACC Player of the Year, concludes his two-year Miami career with a 64-10 overall singles record and a 46-16 doubles mark. His 36-5 overall singles record as a junior in 2006 ranks second in Miami history, while his 28-5 singles record this season ties the eighth-best mark in program history and leads the team in 2007.
D’Agord advanced to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship in both singles and doubles as both a junior and senior, and looks to continue his tennis career in the professional ranks.
“I’m very proud of Luigi and his career at UM,” said third-year Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “He improved tremendously in the last few years, and became one of the best players in college tennis. He consistently gave us amazing wins at No. 1 singles and doubles.
“It’s time for him to move on and play at the professional level. I will certainly enjoy following his career.”
“Today’s match was definitely the best of the tourney so far,” added assistant coach CJ Weber. “It was extremely high-quality tennis from both players. “I couldn’t be more proud of Luigi for his growth as a player and as a person. I’m sad about him leaving, but I can’t wait to see how he does on the tour.”
