Anderton Tabbed As ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year

Coral Gables, Fla. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced University of Miami women’s tennis assistant coach, David Anderton as the 2007 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year.
Anderton, who is in his fourth season with the Hurricanes, helped Miami reach the NCAA Tournament all four years with the program including their recent run, upsetting eighth-ranked Southern California to advance to this season’s quarterfinals.
Under Anderton’s assistance, the Miami women’s tennis team reached the NCAA finals last season for the first time since 1985, and has been invited to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships three years in a row. At the same time, Anderton has helped in the essential development of the Miami women’s tennis team who has seen continued success in the national rankings, sitting amongst the top-10 teams in the country throughout his tenure.
Alongside head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, Anderton has had an hand in coaching some of Miami’s most outstanding players including former ITA National Player of the Year and ITA National Indoor Champion Megan Bradley, the South Region/ITA Arther Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship recipient and the Hurricanes’ all-time leader in career singles and doubles Audrey Banada, and the nation’s current top-ranked singles player and last season’s ITA National Player of the Year, junior Audra Cohen.
Also capturing recognition by the ITA this season was freshman Laura Vallverdu who earned the South Region/ ITA National Player to Watch award. The award goes to a player who has not yet won an ITA national singles title, but is expected to perform at a high level the rest of their careers and contend for national titles. As the 21st-ranked player in the country, Vallverdu has an overall record of 32-3 in singles, with a 23-6 overall record in doubles. The Valencia, Venezuela native is ranked 17th in the nation alongside Cohen in doubles action.
