Final Stats

CARY, N.C. – The University of Virginia used a 4-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the ACC Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday morning at the Cary Tennis Center to knock the University of Miami out of tournament play for the third-straight season.

The top-seeded Cavaliers (24-3), ranked second in the latest ITA rankings, advance to Saturday’s ACC semifinals to take on fourth-seeded Wake Forest, while the 35th-ranked Hurricanes (11-13) await the NCAA Tournament selections, scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, on ESPNEWS at 2:30 p.m. The `Canes have competed in the NCAA Tournament 41 times in the last 48 years and advanced to the “Sweet 16” just one year ago – only to be eliminated by Virginia.

After dropping the No. 2 doubles match, Miami’s freshmen duo of J.C. Whitner (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) picked up its second-straight win in ACC Championship play at No. 3, leaving the doubles point contingent on the outcome of the top-flight doubles match between Virginia’s second-ranked pair of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey and Miami’s third-ranked tandem of seniors Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs). The Cavaliers came out on top, 9-7, to claim the early 1-0 lead.

Virginia extended its lead to 2-0, with a commanding victory at No. 6. But Miami managed to cut the Virginia advantage to just one point, trailing 2-1, as Cohen used straight sets to win at No. 3 over 108th-ranked Dominic Inglot.

In the top-flight singles match, Virginia’s second-ranked Devvarman snapped D’Agord’s 12-match win streak and handed the two-time ACC Player of the Year just his fourth singles loss of the year to increase the Cavalier lead to 3-1. Houston Barrick then clinched the match for Virginia, defeating Nieto in the No. 5 spot, to send the top-seeded Cavaliers into the ACC semifinals.
