Coral Gables, Fla. – The 33rd-ranked University of Miami men’s tennis team enters this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Championship seeded eighth of 12 teams, and will open tournament play versus ninth-seeded Georgia Tech on Thursday, April 19, at 9 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park at Cary, N.C.
The Hurricanes (10-12, 5-6 ACC) swept the 52nd-ranked Yellow Jackets (7-14, 4-7 ACC), 7-0, in their meeting in Coral Gables on March 20 and lead the all-time series 30-4.
The Hurricanes continue to be led by No. 20 senior Luigi D’Agord (23-3, 11-0 ACC), who completed his second-straight undefeated season in ACC play at the No. 1 position. D’Agord and fellow senior Josh Cohen (18-12, 6-5 ACC) are ranked eighth in the nation at the No. 1 spot and have put together a team-best 20-5 doubles record in 2007, including a 9-2 mark in conference competition.
Cohen, the winningest Hurricane ever with a combined 169 wins, tied the 30-year old Miami record of 81 career doubles wins with Sunday’s 8-3 victory over NC State’s 21st-ranked tandem of Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt.
Second-ranked Virginia earned the tournament’s top seed after going undefeated in ACC play, followed by North Carolina with a two seed, Duke with a three seed and Wake Forest seeded fourth. The top-four seeds receive a first-round bye, and the winner of the Miami-Georgia Tech match advances to Friday’s second round to face the Cavaliers at 9 a.m.
