Final Stats

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 37 University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to third-ranked Virginia, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

With their third-straight loss, the Hurricanes fall to 9-10 overall and 4-4 in ACC play, while the Cavaliers win their fifth straight to improve to 20-3 on the year and remain undefeated in ACC play at 8-0.

Remaining perfect in ACC singles play is Miami senior Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas), who has gone 19-0 at the No. 1 position in two years with the Hurricanes. On Friday, the 20th-ranked D’Agord battled for his eighth ACC singles win of the season, using straight sets to upset No. 2 Somdev Devvarman – handing the reigning ACC Player of the Week his first conference loss of the year. D’Agord is the league’s only undefeated player at the No. 1 spot.

Virginia won all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 advantage. The eighth-ranked top-flight duo of D’Agord and senior Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) dropped their first ACC doubles match of the season, as Virginia’s No. 2 tandem of Devvarman and junior Treat Huey won, 8-5.

Sophomore Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) returned to the court for the first time since sustaining an injury during the March 24 match versus Maryland, and alongside junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) was edged in the No. 2 doubles match, 9-8, by the No. 47 pair of freshmen Dominic Inglot and Houston Barrick.

In singles play, Vallverdu exited his No. 2 match early because of the injury, moving the Cavaliers lead to 2-0. D’Agord recorded the `Canes’ first point of the day with the win at the No. 1 position, while Subramanian battled back to put up Miami’s second point. After dropping the first set to Virginia senior Marko Miklo, 6-4, Subramanian cruised to the second-set 6-2 win, and then won the tie break 10-5 to claim the match.

“Obviously, Virginia has a very good team, which is why they are ranked third in the nation,” said assistant coach C.J. Weber. “[Head coach] Mario [Rincon] and I both thought we had some good chances today, but Virginia played very well in the big points.

“However, Luigi and Vivek played great for us today and stayed headstrong. They did a good job of focusing on the ball and accomplishing the goal of just winning.”

The University of Miami men’s tennis team returns to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center to close out their regular-season home schedule versus No. 30 Virginia Tech on Sunday, April 8, at 1 p.m. Miami’s two seniors – D’Agord and Cohen – will be honored before the start of singles play. Admission is free.
