Gators Upend Hurricanes Men's Tennis, 7-0

Gainesville, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to No. 23 Florida, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Complex, playing its seventh-straight ranked opponent and fifth top-25 opponent in its last six matches.
Competing in the program’s longest running rivalry, the 73rd-ranked Hurricanes (4-7) lost to the Gators for just the 13th time in 60 meetings. With Tuesday’s decision, UF (6-4) improved to 5-1 on its own court, with its lone home loss to top-ranked Georgia on Sunday.
Florida got off to a strong start, earning the doubles point courtesy of wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The duo of Greg Ouellette and Jesse Levine handed Miami’s 15th-ranked tandem of Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) and Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) just its third loss of the year, 8-4.
Highlighting the `Canes’ performance on Tuesday was the No. 2 pair of Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) and Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.), bouncing back from a loss on Saturday to Ohio State’s 18th-ranked doubles duo to cruise past UF’s Dan Cash and Billy Mulligan, 8-3.
Miami’s No. 3 tandem of freshmen Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) and Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) fell to Florida’s Nestor Briceno and Geoffrey Barton, 8-4.
The Gators went on to sweep the Hurricanes in singles competition, despite strong opposition by 44th-ranked D’Agord at No. 1 and Subramanian at No.4. Both D’Agord and Subramanian battled their opponents to three sets before falling.
Miami returns to Coral Gables for a five-match home stand – beginning with a March 16 match versus ACC rival Clemson at 2 p.m. Admission to all regular-season matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center is free.
