Women's Tennis Gears-up For a Competitive Weekend

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team prepare to take on two tough and highly competitive ranked opponents, as the Hurricanes host No. 22 Texas on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. On Sunday, Miami will travel to Gainesville to take on in-state rival and No. 4 ranked Florida at the Linder Stadium at the Ring Tennis Stadium set to begin at 1 p.m. Miami remains the eighth ranked team in the country in the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis rankings that are administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), it was announced Tuesday.

The Hurricanes (4-1, 0-0 ACC), get back into action after two weeks of practice. Prior to their preparations for this weekend’s match-ups, Miami finished 2-1 in their third consecutive appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships February 1-3. Miami went on to defeat tournament host Wisconsin 7-0 in the first round (February 1). The Hurricanes faced then No. 8 Northwestern in the quarterfinals the following day. After a hard fought contest, Miami fell to the Wildcats 4-3. In the quarterfinals consolation round, the Hurricanes defeated No. 10 Baylor 6-1 (February 3).

Miami was ranked eighth in the last ITA rankings, released February 6. Six Atlantic Coast Conference schools remain ranked among the Top 25 with three teams in the Top 10 in the latest rankings. Georgia Tech ranked the highest at No. 3, followed by North Carolina and Miami at No. 7 and No. 8 respectively. Duke comes in at No. 11, while Clemson and Wake Forest are ranked Nos. 13 and 20 respectively.

Scouting the Longhorns:

No. 22 Texas will head to Coral Gables after capturing a 4-0 record in the dual season last weekend. UT posted a 6-1 victory over Ole Miss and captured a 4-3 win over then No. 22 Arizona State in their first home matches of the season last weekend.

This season, Texas returns three letterwinners including seniors Petra Dizdar and Ristine Olson. With one player ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles ranking, No.70 freshman Sarah Lancaster, the Longhorns will look to claim a victory over the Hurricanes after falling last season to Miami 4-3 in Austin, Texas.
