Cohen Leads No. 11 Men's Tennis to 6-1 Win Over UCF
Feb. 11, 2007
ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) improved to 4-1 in dual match singles play to lead the No. 11 University of Miami men’s tennis team to its second-straight win, downing the 69th-ranked University of Central Florida, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Hurricanes improved to 4-1, while the Golden Knights fell to 3-3.
Cohen dominated his No. 3 singes match, letting up just one game in his 6-1, 6-0 straight sets win over UCF’s Ener Gursoy. Pairing up with senior All- American Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) once again in top-flight doubles competition, the duo downed UCF’s Sinan Sudas and Johan Beigart, 8-5, to improve to 5-0 in dual match play and 7-0 on the season.
D’Agord was also strong in the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Sudas, 6-2, 6-3 to remain undefeated at 5-0 in dual match play and 8-0 overall.
Freshman J.C. Whitner (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) put in a strong performance for the Hurricanes in the No. 6 singles position, picking up his second win in dual match play with a victory over Norman Alcantara.
Sophomore All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) and junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) also put points on the board in singles action for the Hurricanes, while the No. 3 doubles pairing of freshmen Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) and Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) improved to 2-0 with an 8-6 defeat of UCF’s Gursoy and Jimmy Roesch.
“It was a good match for us today as our team continues to prepare for the upcoming indoor nationals,” said Hurricanes assistant coach C.J. Weber. “Josh (Cohen) played really well and did a good job providing senior leadership for us on the court. It’s always good for a senior to go out there and dominate the way he did.
“As a freshman, J.C. (Whitner) really stepped up and took care of business today. He got this win under his belt and I look forward to him doing more of that as the season progresses.”
The No. 11 University of Miami men’s tennis team returns to action this weekend, competing at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoors Tournament. The 14th-seeded Hurricanes will take on third-seeded UCLA in first round action on Friday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m.
