Feb. 9, 2007
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 11 University of Miami men’s tennis team swept all three doubles matches and won the top four singles matches in straight sets to pick up its first road win of the season, defeating the University of South Florida, 5-2.
The Hurricanes (3-1) made some changes to its lineup, as the team looked to bounce back from Monday’s disappointing loss to unranked Wisconsin. While senior All-American Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) continued his strong play, cruising past USF’s Henning Hipp, 6-2, 6-2, for his seventh-straight singles win of 2007, sophomore All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) moved into the No. 2 position for the first time in this season’s dual match play, and handed USF’s Marc Jaeger a 6-2, 6-0 loss.
Also picking up points for Miami was senior Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) in the No. 3 spot and junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) playing at the No. 4 position.
The Hurricanes opened Friday’s competition by sweeping all three doubles matches, including a commanding 8-2 victory by D’Agord and Cohen in top-flight doubles action.
“Josh (Cohen) had a great day in both singles and doubles competition,” said Hurricanes head coach Mario Rincon, “but we still need to compete better in some spots.”
The Bulls dropped their third straight to a ranked opponent to fall to 1-3 on the season.
The University of Miami men’s tennis team continues their multi-match road swing on Sunday, February 11, taking on UCF at 11 a.m.
