Wisconsin Edges No. 10 Men's Tennis, 4-3
Feb. 5, 2007
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 10 University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling to Wisconsin, 4-3, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
The Hurricanes (2-1) and Badgers (4-0) were originally scheduled to meet on Sunday morning, however continuing rain forced the postponement. On Monday the match was delayed again, but once the courts dried, both teams began competition in the unseasonably chilly and windy South Florida conditions.
Although Miami’s No. 1 doubles pair of senior All-American Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and senior Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) used an 8-5 victory to improve to 3-0 in dual match play, the Hurricanes conceded the doubles point as Wisconsin claimed the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.
In singles competition, D’Agord picked up a win at the No.1 spot, downing Wisconsin’s Jeremy Sonkin in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6, to remain undefeated.
Miami sophomore All-American Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) improved to 3-0 at the No. 3 position with a 6-4, 6-2 win to hand Lachezar Kasarov his first loss of 2007, while junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) also scored a point for the Hurricanes in his first competition of the season, defeating Felipe Bellido, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 5 slot.
With the score tied 3-3, it came down to the No. 2 singles battle between Cohen and Wisconsin’s Nolan Polley to decide the match. Cohen took the first set 6-3, but Polley battled back for the 6-4 set two win to tie it up. Polley carried his momentum over to the third set and went up early, but Cohen charged back to take the 6-5 advantage. However, Polley knotted it back up at 6-all and went on to seal the win for the visiting Badgers with the tiebreaker victory.
“We played poorly in some spots in the lineup today and Wisconsin deserved to win,” said Hurricanes head coach Mario Rincon.
The University of Miami men’s tennis team hits the road for their next four competitions, beginning with a match at South Florida (1-2) on Friday, February 9 at 2 p.m.
