Miami Knocks Off Wisconsin-Milwaukee 78-71

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Miami fended off a second-half comeback by Wisconsin-Milwaukee to hold on to a 78-71 victory in front of 2,565 fans – the second-largest crowd to ever watch at women’s game at the BankUnited Center – Monday afternoon on Youth Day at the BankUnited Center.
After taking a 12-point, 39-27 lead into the half, the Hurricanes (2-0) saw the margin over the Panthers (0-2) cut down to two at 71-69 on a lay-up by UWM’s Turquoise McCain with less than two minutes to play.
Fifty-four seconds later, Wisconsin-Milwaukee regained possession on a missed three-pointer by UM senior guard Renee Taylor, who finished with a game-high 23 points.
Taylor made up for her missed shot on the Panther possession, stepping into the lane to steal a ball from Aubrey Hampton with 30 seconds showing. Taylor gathered the ball and lobbed a pass to sophomore guard LaToya Cunningham who caught the outlet and scored on the fastbreak while drawing an intentional foul from McCain. Cunningham hit one of her two free throws to finish with 12 points on the day and put the Hurricanes up 74-69.
After UM re-gained possession as a result of the foul by McCain the Panthers were forced to foul Taylor who sank two free throws to help lead to the eventual 78-71 victory.
Along with Taylor’s 23 points and Cunningham’s 12, all 10 active UM players scored at least two points including junior guard Albrey Grimsley who added 10 points.
Miami’s defensive efforts, highlighted by Grimsley’s and junior guard Maurita Reid’s four steals each, led to 22 Wisconsin-Milwaukee turnovers including 12 in the first half.
Four players for UWM scored double figures led by Meredith Onson who registered 17 while hitting 4-of-5 three-point attempts.
Monday’s attendance of 2,565 fans – primarily made up of local elementary and middle school students celebrating Youth Day – is the second-largest crowd in UM’s three-year history of playing in the BankUnited Center.
Miami will travel over 2,500 miles across country next for a three-game, five-day California road trip beginning with a contest at Santa Clara Wednesday at 7 p.m. (EST)
Hurricanes, Panthers to Attend “A Conversation with The Honorable John G. Roberts, Jr.”
The Miami and Wisconsin-Milwaukee women’s basketball programs will attend tonight’s lecture presented by Chief Justice of the United State, John G. Roberts, Jr. at the BankUnited Center. Roberts is serving as an esteemed guest for the inaugural program of the University Lecture Series. The lecture series features prominent individuals and premier programs for the intellectual engagement and cultural enrichment of the University community.
The event, scheduled for 7 p.m., is open only to UM students, faculty, and staff.
