Hurricanes Advance at Wilson ITA Southeast Regionals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Six out of seven members of the University of Miami men’s tennis team advanced to the singles round of 64 with victories Friday at the 2006 Wilson ITA Southeast Regionals held at the University of Kentucky.
UM senior Josh Cohen, who is ranked No. 54 nationally and seeded 12th in the tournament, knocked off Tennessee’s Derek Stephens 6-1, 6-3 while sophomore Daniel Vallverdu, ranked No. 70 and seeded 14th, defeated Vanderbilt’s Scott Lieberman 6-4, 6-1. Cohen will take on South Florida’s Henning Hipp and Vallverdu will square off with Auburn’s Terence Nugent in Saturday’s round of 64.
Also in action was junior Vivek Subramanian, who defeated Nick Maurillo of Auburn 6-2, 6-4, freshman Barnabas Carrega, who knocked off Alabama’s Taylor Striplin 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, freshman Hector Nieto, who upended Martin Crockett of Birmingham Southern 6-0, 6-3, and sophomore Josip Rupena, who defeated Austin Peay’s Patrick Puertolas 6-5, 6-2.
In doubles, Neito and Rupena defeated Auburn’s Hunter Mills and Stephen Nash 9-8 (2) to advance to the round of 64.
