Miami Rolls through First Day of Hurricane Fall Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Fending off storms in the South Florida area, members of the University of Miami men’s tennis team concluded the first day of play at the Hurricane Fall Invitational unscathed, winning three doubles matches and four singles contests against Georgia Southern Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Two additional singles matches were postponed until Saturday morning due to lightning.

In doubles, Luigi D’Agord and Vivek Subramanian defeated Emmanuel Nkoueleue and Philip Prins (8-5), Barnabas Carrega and Josh Cohen upended Joris De Weerdt and Gregory Bekkers (8-3) and Josip Rupena and Hector Nieto downed Borja Malet and Neil Shine (8-4).

In singles, Cohen, ranked No. 54 in singles, cruised past De Weerdt in a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 victory. Rupena handled Bekkers 6-3, 6-3 while Nieto defeated Malet 6-2, 6-4. Subramanian claimed UM’s last victory of the day, downing Nkoueleu 6-3, 6-4.

Two additional matches featuring UM’s Carrega and J.C. Whitner versus GSU’s Daniel Harden and Prins, respectively, were postponed to Saturday morning due to lightning.

The postponed matches are slated to begin Saturday at 9 a.m.
