Seventh Seeded Miami Blanks Boston to Advance to NCAA Second Round

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– Seventh-seeded Miami cruised to a 4-0 victory over BostonUniversity (15-7) in the first-round of the 2006 NCAA Women’s Tennis Coral Gables Regional held at the NeilSchiffTennisCenter Friday afternoon. The Hurricanes (20-6) advance to Saturday’s 3 p.m. second-round match against cross-town rival FIU (21-5) who defeated Iowa, 4-1, earlier in the day. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The winner of Saturday’s match advances to the NCAA Championship Round of 16 May 18-22 in Stanford, Calif.
The Hurricanes jumped to a 1-0 match lead after claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Miami’s second ranked Melissa Applebaum/ Audra Cohen duo defeated Boston’s Gina Sabatino/Monica Shepherd duo 8-4 at the No. 1 slot before Caren Seenauth and Patricia Starzyk clinched the point with an 8-3 victory over Cori Lefkowith and Danielle Abraham at the No. 3 position.
Cohen, a sophomore out of Plantation, Fla. who is ranked second nationally, claimed a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory over junior Erin Katims (Boca Raton, Fla.) at the No. 1 position.
Miami took a 3-0 match lead after junior Audrey Banada (North Miami Beach, Fla.) downed freshman Yana Sadovskaya (Riga, Latvia) 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 slot.
Freshman Monika Dancevic (Niagara Falls, Ontario), who is ranked 107th, clinched the win for the Hurricanes at the No. 3 position with a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set victory over senior Laura Ahmes (Sarasota, Fla.)
Miami and FIU will square-off Saturday at 3 p.m. in the NeilSchiffTennisCenter. Tickets will be sold at the entrance and are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The match can also be followed via live stats on www.hurricanesports.com.
